Projects – Mapping recycling facilities on estates in the London Boroughs of Hackney, Islington and Tower Hamlets

Overview:

Common Resource was asked to undertake various mapping exercises in inner-city areas in order for Local Authorities and Regeneration agencies to:

• plan the installation of appropriate recycling containers

§         provide data on anticipated recyclables from various housing complexes and estates

Specific Challenges

The specific challenges included:

• Making sure each bin could be identified by individual serial number and tracked to the recyclers.
• Ensure collection staff recorded location and type of receptacle correctly

·        Developed an information framework in order to capture additional information

Lessons Learned

The lessons learned included:

The recruitment and training of local staff led to improved take-up of recycling facilities

Residents have an unexpectedly high interest in recycling but want simple solutions.
