About Common Resource

Common Resource aims to be a flagship international organisation leading applied sustainable development and regeneration initiatives for a sustainable urban footprint.

Active in East London since 2001 Common Resource has received mainly public funding to manage and operate a variety of projects in Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Islington. The key objective has been to develop a unique set of strategic community development and regeneration projects which are innovative and scaleable pilots. These test and achieve a wide range of objectives for sustainable development in the inner-city multi-ethnic communities of
East London.

Over the six years Common Resource has operated various projects including:

  • from door-to-door recycling operations to mapping estate recycling operations and feasibility reports for kerbside recycling collections;
  • community currency development initiatives for the local exchange of services and goods;
  • the development of socio-economic businesses and tenants co-operatives focusing on healthy food consumption and environmental health;
  • the use of graffiti and youth street art as a means of communication on environmental issues and the set-up of youth and graphic design business services;
  • operating and training web-based free software for community and volunteer groups including the design, set up and update of business/group websites;
  • managing local reuse and exchange initiatives;
  • supporting local groups and community businesses on sustainability issues. We help group access on a wide range of professional and community publications on various topics including resource and environmental management, regeneration, waste and water issues, etc. These are available for all our members and visitors in our main office.

Our key development objective has been to establish, measure and publish a flow of innovative schemes based on ideas which are linked with applied and operational community projects. These enable global sustainable development objectives set by national and local government strategies, as well as corporate social responsibility (CSR) objectives. CSR use private economic resources for the development of sustainable communities in inner-city East London areas.
